Chapter 2: Hungover
I tried to pray to God but I couldn’t get through, so I desperately prayed to Britney Spears.
When I woke up on Saturday afternoon, I had the worst hangover I’d ever experienced. My tongue was dry enough to bite in half. The sides of my jaw were so sore that I almost wondered if I had been in a fight and forgotten. I sat up and it seemed like all the blood from my head raced down my spinal cord and I grew dizzy and nauseous. I dropped my head back onto the pillow in hopes to sleep the agony away, but my insatiable thirst prevented that from happening. I tossed the blanket off my chest toward the feet of my bed and accidentally startled Carolina awake. She jumped off the bed and ran to the locked door and began scratching at the carpet to tell me she was ready to leave. I was surprised that she let me sleep that long, but more than that I was grateful. I opened my bedroom door and Carolina ran down the hall toward the back door. I dragged my feet behind her so that I could open the screen door.
